Not every tasker is equal. Here are the warning signs that should make you pause — and what to do instead.

Online marketplaces make hiring fast and convenient. But speed can tempt you to skip the due diligence that would protect you offline. Here are eight things to look out for.

1. No verified badge

An unverified profile isn't automatically bad, but it means their identity hasn't been confirmed. For in-home services especially, choose verified Taskers.

2. Zero reviews or only very old ones

A tasker with no reviews in the last six months may have been inactive — or may have created a new account after poor performance elsewhere.

3. Bids far below market rate

If every other bid is between ₦15,000–₦20,000 and one comes in at ₦5,000, ask why. Extreme underbidding often signals either inexperience or an intent to upsell once inside your home.

4. Requests to pay outside the platform

Any request to pay via bank transfer, cash, or WhatsApp is a major red flag. CitiTasker's escrow protects you. Off-platform payments don't.

5. Vague or copy-pasted bid messages

A bid that could apply to any job ("I am a professional and I will do a great job for you") shows the Tasker didn't read your posting.

6. Unwillingness to confirm details in chat

A tasker who refuses to clarify scope, timing, or materials before the job starts will be difficult to manage during it.

7. Pressure to decide immediately

Legitimate taskers don't need you to commit in the next five minutes. Urgency pressure is a soft manipulation tactic.

8. No profile photo or a stock-photo face

CitiTasker requires a real photo. A stock image or avatar is worth a question before you hire.

The bottom line: take two minutes to skim the profile, read the last three reviews, and check the verification badge. That's usually enough to separate the professionals from the rest.
